First Presbyterian Church of Coos Bay Oregon

The First Presbyterian Church of Coos Bay Oregon was chartered August 3, 1890
as the First Presbyterian Church of Marshfield Oregon with The Rev. J.B. Rideout as the organizing pastor.  The first building was dedicated on October 1, 1893. About 1900 the church was moved to the 11th Street Site.  Later the congregation moved to 4th Street, where the present Masonic Lodge building now stands.  The present site was purchased in 1948 and the new building was occupied on June 24, 1951 with the official dedication of the building by Southwestern Oregon Presbytery when the met on October 16, 1951.  The Ethel Meyers Hall (Christian Education Wing) was completed in 1959.

In 2007 the congregation adopted a new Mission Statement to lead them into the future. This statement offers an exciting challenge for mission and ministry.

“We Share the Good News of Jesus Christ by our
Faith, Praise, Witness, Mission and Christian Love.”

First Presbyterian Church of Coos Bay is a people of faith, called together by god.  The church exists not for itself, but for sharing the mission of Jesus Christ.   Nurtured in scripture and the sacraments of the church universal, we will continue the tasks of worship, teaching, healing, mission and guiding the community of faith that began with the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

We are a caring congregation on a continuing faith journey, who have the freedom to be unsure about our faith, to be challenged, to face issues, to think, study, doubt, wonder and reach our own conclusions.  Our faith gains relevance through the Gospel of Jesus Christ when we seek to be active witnesses to the world by:
… having an open door and open worship,
… reaching out and caring for those in need,                                                             … recognizing and acknowledging the importance
and worth of every human being.
